News – Smart to launch diesel powered model
The world’s favorite small car will soon be available in the UK with a diesel engine. Right-hand drive smart fortwo Cdi models fitted with diesel engines will start coming off the production line at smart’s factory in Hambach, Germany in February 2009.
British motorists will then be able to own the world’s most eco-friendly car. The smart fortwo CDi diesel, which will be available as a coupe and cabrio, has lower CO2 emissions than any other car currently in production. Releasing just 88g of carbon dioxide a kilometer the smart fortwo diesel will be just £35 per year to tax (at current road fund licence rates).
The new smart fortwo diesel can cover 670 miles on a tank of fuel and achieves a remarkable 85.6 miles per gallon. Quite literally London to John O’Groats non-stop.
Dermot Kelly, managing director of Mercedes-Benz Cars, commented: ‘The cdi gives customers the whole range of smart benefits when driving in and around the city, with the added bonus of low cost, long distance motoring.
‘Our retailers are reporting heightened interest in the iconic two-seater; registrations are buoyant and we think the addition of the smart cdi to the range early next year will give added momentum.’ he added.
With sales of smart fortwo at record levels this year (up an massive 135% in the first six months compared to the same period in 2007) sales will only be boosted further by the introduction of the smart fortwo CDi in Spring 2009.
