8 December 2008 – Smart diesel, the cleanest car in the world
When smart launches its first diesel engineed car next year it will be the greenest diesel powered car on the planet. The smart fortwo cdi diesel will have ultra-low carbon emissions of just 88g/km.
Petrol engineed smart fortwo already have low CO2 emission of either 112g/km or 116g/km depending on engine size. That makes the smart fortwo coupe and cabrio one of the cheapest cars on the road to tax at just £35. It also means that smart forwo cars are exempt from London’s congestion charge too.
Smart fortwo cdi diesel goes one better though and will be completely exempt from car tax. With an expected efficiency of 83mpg around town, smart diesel will be one of the cheapest cars to run.
The lean burn three-cylinder 799cc diesel engine isn’t going to be the fastest car at the traffic lights. 0-60 is reached in 19.8 seconds and top speed is 85mph. The smart fortwo diesel isn’t about power though. It’s the new eco-champion of the roads, where economy and environment are fast becoming more desirable than power and performance. Even so, the smart cdi has good mid-range power making it nippy around city chicanes.
Smart fortwo cdi goes on sale in the UK in March with a price tag from £7,915.00. City Vehicle Leasing, the low cost smart contract hire specialists are expected to have the cheapest contract hire rates.
Smart’s eco-offensive doesn’t stop there. The smart cdi is one of a number of ultra-low and zero emission smart cars that will be coming to the UK in the next few years. Last month smart launched their micro hybrid drive as an option in their 61hp and 71hp petrol engineed fortwos. An automatic stop-start function operates when the engine is idling, to provide fuel savings of up to 23% and low CO2 emissions of around 103 g/km.
A fully electric smart car will be launched in the UK in 2010.
All new smart fortwo models will be available on contract hire from City Vehicle Leasing from launch.
