With sales of smart fortwo showing no sign of slowing down as we reach the end of the first quarter of 2009, the iconic micro car brand continues to go from strength to strength. Following a 4% increase in sales in January and a 43.4% increase in worldwide sales in 2008, it seems as though the contract hire customer’s favourite eco-car can do no wrong.

Having only been introduced to the Canadian market five years ago it is the second year running that smart fortwo has been bestowed with the ecoEnergy for Vehicles award for being Canada’s most fuel efficient two-seater car. Smart’s impressive fuel economy figures, combined with low carbon dioxide emissions left the competition standing.
All new smart fortwo 61hp and 71hp models are now fitted with micro hybrid drive as standard, giving fuel savings of up to 29%. The smart fortwo 71hp averages 65.7mpg on the combined cycle, whilst emitting just 103g/km CO2 emissions.
On receiving the award Mercedes-Benz Canada’s CEO Marcus Breitschwedt was reported as saying. ‘Not only is the smart fortwo produced in one of the most modern and environmentally friendly plants in the world, its excellent fuel economy and low vehicle emissions have made it a hallmark for fuel efficiency, functionality and fun’
Contract hire customers have been snapping the new smart fortwo micro hybrid drive models up in their hundreds.
