4 May 2009 – Contract Hire News – Government scrappage scheme to benefit smart fortwo customers
Contract hire customers considering leasing a new smart fortwo cabrio in time for summer could be in for a boost as the Government’s new scrappage scheme could knock £2,000 off the purchase price.
Following the announcement by Chancellor Alistair Darling that a UK vehicle scrappage scheme has been given the green light, Mercedes-Benz has revealed that it intends to take part in the initiative and the first car it will offer is the ultra-low emission, smart fortwo cabrio.
Mercedes-Benz has been quick to embrace the voluntary scheme, which aims to encourage motorists to scrap high polluting cars and replacing them with more environmentally friendly models.
Mercedes-Benz Cars plans to make the full Mercedes model line up available also. So contract hire customers looking for an A-Class, C-Class or new E-Class could benefit from a purchase price reduction of up to £2,000.
Mercedes-Benz new BlueEfficiency models, with lower CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures will also be available to contract hire customers through the new scheme.
Simon Oldfield, sales director at Mercedes-Benz Cars said: ‘We welcome the Government’s objective of the scrappage scheme to replace older, more polluting vehicles with clean new cars.
‘It seems appropriate to offer the world’s cleanest production cabrio to customers.’
Whilst Mercedes-Benz CLK, SLK and S-Class models will also be available under the scrappage scheme it is thought that demand will be highest for A-Class and B-Class models.
Contract hire customers can benefit from up to £2,000 off the purchase price of any new Mercedes-Benz or smart car that is eligible to be included the scrappage scheme, when they scrap a car that has been on the road for ten years or more.
Full information regarding how the scrappage scheme will work has yet to released by the Government. Once this is known Mercedes-Benz will publish details on how to purchase a new Mercedes-Benz car through the scheme on their website. In the meantime you can register your interest at mercedes-benz.co.uk/scrappage.
Information on how Mercedes-Benz and smart contract hire customers can benefit from the new scrappage scheme will be published at www.cityvehicleleasing.co.uk.
