Smart drivers save money on soaring motoring costs
The steady rise in motoring costs of the last twelve months has hit motorists hard and has forced many to review their transport arrangements. Some have sought alternatives such as public transport or pedal power, but whilst these may be more cost effective and eco-friendly methods of getting around, they are not always the most practical.
Rather than abandoning their cars altogether an increasing number of drivers have discovered that there is a car that can provide a practical alternative to thirsty, big-engineed vehicles, which has a lower impact on the pocket and the environment.
Smart car sales rocket due to eco-credentials
The smart car with its impressive economical and environmental appeal is currently enjoying a 135% increase in sales nationwide over the first six months of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007. When the car was first launched in the 1990s, its appeal was limited. Petrol was relatively cheap and people were less concerned about the environment than they are today. A decade later and smart is being embraced by a new generation of people who appreciate the smart car’s practicality and economy.
Smart’s naturally aspirated three-cylinder petrol engines achieves more than 60 miles per gallon on the combined cycle, whilst the 84bhp turbo engine smart delivers an equally impressive 57mpg on the same journey. So the savings soon start to clock up at the pumps.
Smart’s low carbon dioxide levels of either 112g/km or 116g/km mean the smart coupe and cabrio are just £35 per year to tax. Meaning more money in your pocket here too.
Smart’s green credentials don’t stop there though. When your smart car eventually reaches the end of its life, 85% of it can be recycled thanks to the car’s construction from eco-friendly parts.
Hybrid and diesel models to join smart line-up
In addition to the smart fortwo coupe and cabrio petrol engineed models a micro hybrid smart fortwo will be launched later in 2008. This hybrid smart car will feature a clever stop/start function that operates when the engine is idling, to provide reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
A diesel model will complete the smart line up in the spring of 2009. With lower CO2 emissions than any car currently in production worldwide, the smart diesel will achieve an incredible 85.6 mpg on the combined cycle.
