News – Smart celebrates 10th anniversary and millionth car
Smart car manufacturer Daimler AG celebrated the tenth anniversary of its successful rear-engined, two-seater smart fortwo model in a rather fitting way, by rolling the millionth smart fortwo car off the production line at its factory in Hambach, Germany.
The anniversary vehicle, which is to be donated to charity, is a micro hybrid with a 52 kw, 71 bhp engine. It is finished in metallic silver and has the Passion equipment line. The micro hybrid model will be launched in the UK later in 2008.
Smart is enjoying record sales in the UK this year, with a sales increase of 135% nationwide in the first six months of the year, compared to 2007. Dr Dieter Zetsche, president and chief executive of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars commented: ‘The continuing rising demand shows the success and the potential of the smart fortwo from Hambach. This year we have already sold 90,000 cars.’
Since smart first appeared at the Paris Motor Show in 1998, it has attracted a loyal and passionate fan base of customers, who fell in love with its unique personality and appreciated the benefits its small size brought. In more recent years the latest model with superior refinements and slightly larger body has caught the attention of an increasing number of people, who have been equally impressed with smart’s economical and environmental credentials.
In addition to the micro hybrid smart fortwo a diesel model will complete the smart line up in the spring of 2009. The smart diesel will achieve an incredible 85.6 mpg on the combined cycle and have lower CO2 emissions than any car currently in production worldwide.
