Car Leasing News – Mercedes-Benz warns drivers not to drive if tired this winter
Mercedes-Benz car leasing customers have some of the most sophisticated and advanced accident prevention technology fitted to their contract hire cars.
Technology such as Lane Assist, Brake Assist and Night Vision can actually stop road accidents occurring, or where they are unavoidable, significantly reduce serious injury to driver and passengers. Car leasing customers with Attention Assist fitted to their Mercedes-Benz are also alerted with audio and visual warning signals should they start displaying signs of tiredness whilst driving.
A 2009 poll of motorists – Sleep in America – has revealed that nearly 2million drivers in America have had a car accident, or narrowly avoided one, as a result of driving whilst tired. 54% of drivers also admitted to driving whilst drowsy at least once this year and a more alarming 28% to driving whilst tired at least once a month.
Mercedes-Benz are therefore encouraging all motorists not to get behind the wheel this winter if they are feeling at all tired or drowsy.
General manager of product management for Mercedes-Benz in the US, Bernie Glaser, warns: ‘As the holidays approach drivers will log significant road miles and recognising the warning signs of drowsy driving is extremely important.
‘While nothing replaces a good night’s sleep, knowing and using countermeasures to remain alert behind the wheel can make all the difference in having drivers and passengers arrive safely at their destination.’
As well as ensuring that you are fit to drive before you set out on your car journey, Mercedes-Benz car leasing specialists City Vehicle Leasing has put together a winter driving checklist for motorists to ensure their cars are in tip-top condition.
1. Check tyres for signs of wear and replace any that are at the end of their life
2. Check brakes are functioning properly and that all the brake lights are working
3. Replace worn or split wiper blades - they won’t clean your windscreen adequately
4. Put a can of de-icer in the car now, so you’re not caught out by the first frost of the year
5. Check that all your lights are working and carry spare bulbs in the car
6. Carry emergency equipment in the car such a first aid kit, torch, fuel can, blankets and
chocolate bars in case you get stranded
Rebecca Williams, customer services manager at the company added. ‘Our winter driving tips are common-sense measures that all motorists should undertake at this time of the year to ensure they are safe whilst driving on winter roads.
‘The Mercedes-Benz range includes some of the safest cars on the road. All models feature an array of passive and active safety features designed to protect the car’s occupants. We recommend a few extra common-sense precautions to ensure our car leasing customers are safe on the roads this winter’.
