The Mercedes-Benz production centre, where two of City Vehicle Leasing’s most popular contract hire models are built, celebrates a milestone and the start of another key development phase this summer.
It is 20 years since building work commenced at Rastatt, which is now home to the A-Class and B-Class and is a site that has been earmarked to play a significant role in Mercedes-Benz’s assault on the compact vehicle segment. The company has announced its intention to offer four cars rather than two in this fiercely-contested sector – three of which will be produced at Rastatt, where 600 million euros is being invested in the facility.
Since being officially opened in May 1992 by the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl, Rastatt has become firmly established alongside Mercedes-Benz’s other German production centres at Sindelfingen and Bremen. Well over two million cars have been manufactured at the plant, which has expanded its facilities over the years, covers a vast area of 1,473,000 square metres and employs approximately 5,500 people.
Production capacity currently totals 250,000 vehicles a year, with the first of a new-generation of models expected to roll off the production lines towards the end of 2011.
