Contract Hire News – Construction starts at new Mercedes-Benz Plant
From 2012, contract hire customers who drive Mercedes-Benz A-Class and B-Class models could find that their car were manufactured in the all new Kecskemét plant in Hungary. The construction work began recently after the official signing ceremony in the Hungarian Parliament, in which Gordon Bajnai, Prime Minister of Hungary and Rainer Schmückle, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Cars, signed the cooperation agreement for the new plant.
The venture will create in the region of 2,500 new jobs and manufacture over 100,000 Mercedes-Benz cars a year starting in 2012. The plant will significantly add to Mercedes-Benz' capacity in the compact car segment and will enjoy €600 million investment.
Rainer Schmückle said ‘By choosing this region, your country, the city of Kecskemét and the people there are becoming part of the history of Mercedes-Benz. And we believe in the performance of the location and the employees. Because, no matter where a Mercedes comes from, it must always meet the highest standards.’
The Kecskemét plant will work in conjunction with the site in Rastatt, Germany, which recently celebrated production of the 500,000th B-Class and 750,000th A-Class in June. From 2012 Kecskemét will produce two cars from the next generation of the A-Class and B-Class compact cars, while Rastatt will concentrate on three vehicles. Kecskemét is located about 80km South of Budapest, in the Puzta region. "Kecskemét offers the best prospects from a commercial standpoint and meets the high qualitative and quantative criteria for a successful Mercedes-Benz production site." said Rainer Schmückle at the ceremony.
Both the A-Class and its bigger brother the B-Class fall into the compact category, but both have very special attributes, Mercedes contract hire customers know. The A-Class has become synonymous with versatility and practicality with almost 2000 litres of space and a flat load floor in the boot when needed. It is also one of the safest cars in it's class, featuring a sandwich concept cabin and Mercedes' ESP system. Likewise the B-Class, the gorgeous and eminently practical bigger brother to the A-Class.
By 2012, a new generation of A-Class and B-Class compacts will be under production in Hungary and available to contract hire through City Vehicle Leasing.
