Contract Hire News – Mercedes-Benz has future technology mapped out
Mercedes-Benz is a world leader in the area of pioneering automotive technology. Many of their innovations have become standard features not only in Mercedes-Benz cars, but also in all makes and models of car.
So what can you expect of your Mercedes contract hire car in 2020? We’ve taken a peak at some of the work in progress at Mercedes’ R&D Department to give you a glimpse at the car technology of the future - no doubt appearing in a Mercedes-Benz contract hire car soon.
The rapid pace of technological advancement in recent years has enabled Mercedes to move closer to its vision of accident free driving. Satellite systems and dynamic sensors can now be harnessed to enable cars to communicate with their surroundings and other road users.
Safety systems that once were passive are now also active, receiving data and information from multiple sources inside and outside the car, through cameras and onboard sensors. Mercedes are working towards a future where ‘sensor fusion’ will enable all the systems in the car to work together to achieve the safest possible driving situation at all times.
Fast forward a few years and how will this technology appear in the Mercedes contract hire car of the future? One example is Mercedes’ DISTRONIC cruise control. This system uses radar to scan the road ahead. It then selects the most appropriate speed for the traffic conditions and continually adjusts it to maintain a safe distance from the car in front.
In the future sensor fusion could enhance the DISTRONIC system further, calling on the Lane Assist system which feeds information about lane position from an onboard camera, should the DISTRONIC radar lose sight of the car in front on winding roads or in multiple lane traffic.
Should Lane Assist’s camera data feed be hampered by heavy rain or strong sunlight, sensor fusion would enable it to draw on information from digital maps, using satellite navigation to pin point the car’s exact position and then determine the lay of the road ahead.
As well as developing the safety systems of the future Mercedes-Benz are also working on technology to improve traffic flow on our increasingly congested roads. Using inter-vehicle communication, information on a car’s position and speed can be passed to cars many miles behind. On-board computers could then calculate the traffic situation ahead and if necessary modify the car’s speed or take measures to avoid traffic jams at an early stage.
Whatever technology is used in the Mercedes contract-hire cars of the future there is one thing you can be certain of. It will be one of the safest and most advanced cars on the road.
