Contract Hire News – Mercedes-Benz reduce carbon emissions
Contract Hire News first reported on Mercedes’ Sustainable Mobility plan last year. With an initial £7 billion budget to spend in the first six years its long-term aim is to develop alternative methods to oil powered cars and to reduce the cars impact on the environment.
In the short term Mercedes-Benz has been making its petrol and diesel engineed cars cleaner, reducing CO2 emissions and improving fuel economy. The Mercedes-Benz CLC and SLK models in particular have seen their carbon emissions fall by 11.28% and 11.72% respectively compared to previous generations of these models.
Contract hire customers can benefit from these reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption figures. In some instances paying less for road fund license and by making savings at the petrol pumps.
Mercedes-Benz longer-term strategy is to make the motorcar less dependent on crude oil. Through their Sustainable Mobility programme Mercedes-Benz are developing the alternative fuels that will power the contract hire cars of the future.
Hybrid technology has already been introduced in the 61hp and 71hp smart fortwo models. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class S400 hybrid is the first hybrid production car in the world to feature a lithium-ion battery.
The new smart diesel, which has been available to contract hire since February this year, is the cleanest production car in the world. Its common-rail diesel engine produces CO2 emissions of just 88g/km. This puts the smart fortwo cdi in road car tax band A and means you don’t pay to tax your car.
The next step on from ultra-low emission will be zero emission. Emission-free electric cars will be launched by both smart and Mercedes-Benz in the next few years. The smart fortwo electric drive goes into main production in 2010 following extensive trials in London and other communities around the world.
Mercedes’ ongoing development of clean-fuel gas engines, battery and hydrogen-powered cars will make alternative fuels a serious option for motorists and contract hire customers in the coming years.
