Since Contract Hire News brought you details of Mercedes’ plans to participate in the Government’s scrappage scheme a few months ago, there has been a surge in the number of people searching for new cars online.
Consumers have been flocking to the website motoring.co.uk to use their Scrappage Scheme Eligibility Checker, which tells you whether your current car meets the required criteria. Since the Government rubber-stamped the scrappage scheme at the beginning of April the number of people using the website’s checker has trebled.
Of the cars that people have been querying on the scrappage checker, 76% in fact would qualify, and would earn their owners a discount of up to £2,000 should they decide to take up the scheme.
The most popular make of car that people have been considering scrapping their car for is a Vauxhall, which according to motoring.co.uk accounted for 33% of searches. Next most popular, and by far the most popular prestige model, was the Mercedes-Benz CLC which accounted for 28% of searches, according to the website.
With a minimum of £2,000 contribution available for a brand new Mercedes-Benz – more on some models – and a range of enhanced finance and contract hire offers available it’s no surprise that people are taking the opportunity to get the model of their dreams, one that may not have been attainable before the scrappage scheme.
The Mercedes-Benz CLC went on sale in the UK in June 2008. In the last twelve months demand for the coupe has been high and has attracted many new customers to the brand for the first time. To qualify for Mercedes-Benz scrappage scheme your car (or small van up to 3.5 tonnes) should have been first registered in the UK on or before 31 August 1999 and you should have owned it for at least 12 months. It should also have a current MOT and be taxed.
