News - Mercedes-Benz debuts BlueEFFICIENCY in the UK
Mercedes’ new environmentally compatible BlueEFFICIENCY technology is available in a UK passenger car. The A-Class is the first car to feature the new Mercedes BlueEFFICIENCY package, which is available on the A160 CDI.
BlueEFFICIENCY is Mercedes’ pioneering fuel-efficiency technology that reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. Dr Thomas Weber, who is in charge of corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars, said ‘This package, which achieves overall fuel savings of up to 12 per cent, includes aerodynamic fine-tuning, our new electric ECO steering system, intelligent lightweight construction, tyres with a low rolling resistance and generator management - to give just a few examples.’
A total of 20 models throughout the Mercedes product range will be part of the BlueEFFICIENCY programme. BlueEFFICIENCY models will replace existing derivatives. Whilst offering improved fuel economy and lower emissions, the new BlueEFFICIENCY cars will be the same price as the models they succeed.
The BlueEFFICIENCY package includes an intelligent fuel economy display and shift indicator, which will assist with driving efficiency.
The Mercedes A160 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is currently available as a 3-door model with manual transmission. The suspension has been lowered and weight savings have been made in several areas, including using a thinner windscreen and lighter alloy wheels. Together with revised aerodynamics that has significantly reduced drag they deliver a 9% improvement in fuel economy.
Emission levels are reduced by 9g/km to 119g/km, putting the A160 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY in the lowest road fund license band. A 12-month tax disc costs just £35. The A160 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY is also exempt from the London Congestion Charge from October 2008.
Plans to launch further BlueEFFICIENCY models in the UK have yet to be announced.
