Car Leasing News – Mercedes-Benz champions new driving academy
Car Leasing News is brought to you this week following a hectic weekend juggling leisure pursuits with family commitments. As Mercedes contract hire customers can’t have failed to notice Sunday was Father’s Day, so as tradition dictates it was home to the parent’s house for a home cooked meal of proportions not seen since Christmas Day.
The fact that Father’s Day also coincided with this year’s Formula One British Grand Prix, would have made the day doubly joyous, had the British contingency, namely Button and Hamilton - driving their respective Mercedes-Benz powered machines - faired better than they did.
Having spent a few hours enthusiastically dispensing advice to the drivers from the comfort of the sofa, father and son shared what is know as ‘quality-time’, even if the outcome was disappointing.
As usual Lewis Hamilton had the support of his family at the race on Sunday with his father Anthony being one of the first to greet the current World Champion in the pit lane after the race.
Father and son had also been together the previous weekend to give their support to the new Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy. 4,000 invited guests attended an event at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge on Saturday 5 June, to mark the launch the new academy for young drivers.
President and chief executive of Mercedes-Benz UK, Wilfried Steffen was at the centre to officially launch the academy, along with Lewis and Anthony Hamilton.
Car Leasing News was interested to hear Hamilton speaking passionately to youngsters about his own experiences when learning to drive, in a lively question and answer session. He later got behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz car to give a precision handling demonstration.
During the launch weekend around 1,000 visitors had the opportunity to take to the centre’s handling circuit for a taster test drive, whilst 2,500 were able to sample some of the new academy’s coaching.
Commenting on Mercedes’ new initiative to give youngsters the real life skills they need to become safe drivers, the McLaren Mercedes champion said: ‘By having the chance to master basic driving skills in the safe and controlled environment of the handling circuits at the Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, young people can gain confidence and focus on controlling the car before they have to deal with traffic situations out on the public roads.’
Mercedes car leasing customers can send their youngsters on one of three modules available at The Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, depending on the age of the child. The Pre-Road module is for young people aged from 12 years up to 16 years. The Provisional Licence module is for drivers who have turned 17. Drivers who have passed their test can enroll for the Post-test module.
The three modules enable youngsters to learn a combined total of 190 skills to equip them with everything they need to know to become a safe and competent driver. The main focus of the modules is mastering different traffic situations and an enhanced understanding of how to control a car. A parent session is also available to teach Mums and Dads how to give the right support to their youngsters learning to drive.
Role play, peer group discussion, practical experiences and self-evaluation boosts young driver’s understanding and will give them the skills they need to cope with the many different situations they may face whilst behind the wheel of a car.
